Transition Year

Transition Year

‘To promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of the students, and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society’.

DES, 1993

Transition Year Programme in SETSS, 2021:

  • 50 Shades Greener

This is where students get credits for helping the environment!

Students engage in awareness and action projects as well as litter picking on planting trees - all in a bid to make a difference against climate change!

  • Come Dine With Me

A cooking challenge where students present a 3 course meal to our judges in a bid to win against their peers!

Students prepare the meals from scratch, photographing and videoing their evidence and sending it to our judges for final review - yummy!

  • Dance Challenge

After training from our wonderful Dance Pro, Colin Brennan, TY's will dance their way through the stages of a VERY intense competition. Keep your eye on our Twitter page for some one-two-step vidoes!

  • Make or Build Something Challenge

Our creative TY's have total free reign here!

The challenge is to make or build something. This could be lego, wood, brick, anything at all!
Final creations are judged by our Construction Studies teacher, Ruairi!

Transition Year Curriculum

All students will continue with the core or continuation subjects of English, Maths, Gaeilge and a Modern Foreign Language (unless exempt). They will also all experience subject sampling of potential Leaving Certificate Subjects, such as Business, Accounting and Economics and the three science disciplines, Biology Chemistry and Physics. There is a strong emphasis on developing life skills and students will have the option, for example, to develop their culinary or budgeting skills. Other TY specific subjects will also be offered, either as rotational modules or year-long options; for example the current cohort have enjoyed Film Studies, Korean, Russian, Yoga and Coding.

‘There is growing evidence that students who have taken the Transition Year Programme are most-self-reliant learners when they enter third level education than their peers’.

Commission on the Points System, Final Report & Recommendations, 1999, p46.
