Crossing The Line

On Tuesday, the 21st of January, myself as well as Jaidan and Amelie from First Year competed in the East Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships, at Avondale House, Rathdrum. Despite the rest of the students having the day off and getting a sleep in for a Teacher Training Day, we ran through mud and over hills, representing Stepaside Educate Together with style.

The second race of the morning was the Junior A Girls 2000m, during which I, Ciara WB from Third Year, took a break from study to compete alongside many of my training partners and fellow competitors from Club and County in a race that was much shorter than the typical distances we train for and compete in. The conditions were nice for racing in, with the rain and wind holding up until after the race had finished. I was happy with a solid 26th place amongst a strong field of athletes. Running was a nice change to my usual training as a racewalker, as part of the Leinster Performance Squad.

After a break for the Stepaside Athletes, while the older age groups were racing, it was time for the second last race of the day, the Minor B Girls 1000m. Both Jaidan and Amelie did a fantastic job representing the school, putting in a great effort along with a large number of First Year girls in the B category. The girls gave their all, with Jaiden taking an impressive 4th place and Amelie crossing the line with a brilliant 35th place showing just how much their training at school has been paying off! This experience has further sparked the girls’ interest in Cross Country. These gains are testament to Sonya’s support and enthusiasm, as well as the girls' obvious talent for running.

This was a great day for athletics in the school as we begin to prepare for the track and field season ahead where we hope to be joined by even more enthusiastic athletes than previous years! A huge thank you to Sharon Wilson for making it possible for us athletes to participate, kindly giving up her time to bring us to and from Wicklow as all staff members were busy with a JCT in-service day!
